Hazardous Substance & Petroleum Sites
Brownfields
For purposes of seeking US EPA funds to assess and cleanup properties, it is important to understand that sites are categorized based on the type of contaminants assumed to be present. The categories are 1) Hazardous Substances, and 2) Petroleum Products.
Sites commonly associated with the use of Hazardous Substances include:
- Former landfills,
- Dry Cleaners,
- Factories & Foundries,
- Buildings with Asbestos and/or Lead Paint
Sites commonly associated with the use of Petroleum Products include:
- Auto Service/Repair Facilities
- Gasoline Filling Stations
- Factories,
While these general categories are useful in determining which types of hazards are most likely present at your properties, most sites will have a combination of both Hazardous Substances and Petroleum Products.
In order to have a complete understanding of what exists at a property, you should conduct a thorough evaluation of the potential for both Hazardous Substances and Petroleum Products to be used in the current or historic operations of that facility. This evaluation is performed during the course of a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment.
