SRW and Cors & Bassett Host Ceremonial Groundbreaking for Former Ironton Iron

Friday, November 30 marked a special occasion for the City of Ironton, SRW, and Cors & Bassett.  After four years of hard work the ceremonial groundbreaking took place at the former Ironton Iron, Inc. facility to signify the beginning of environmental cleanup.

Outgoing Mayor John Elam referred to this project as a "labor of love," which he undertook shortly after taking office.  Enlisting the help of SRW for environmental consulting and grant-writing services, as well as Cors & Bassett for environmental legal representation, Elam and the City recognized that the 26-acre site would be a key property to market for future commercial development.  Upon cleanup, the City looks to attract a company that is a long-term employer, and will maintain a positive presence in the community.

The groundbreaking was attended by various community members as well as by representatives of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio Department of Development.  Elam began the ceremony by bringing the crowd up to speed on the City's efforts and the progress that was made possible through the ongoing coordination with SRW, Cors & Bassett, and the State EPA and ODOD.  The crowd then turned its attention to a derelict electrical transfer substation at the southeastern portion of the site.  Elam impressed everyone by climbing into a trackhoe, which he used to knock down a wall of the substation.

Aside from this demolition, the environmental cleanup calls for the removal of contaminated soil and treatment of groundwater, which is impacted by chlorinated solvents.
